Sometimes when I walk on the pier, I close my eyes and hear the waves on both sides, wind on metal,
constant...the sound of a fish splashing, a sea gull's piercing call,
scattered across the lull of water and wind, impossible to predict or control. Walking there, eyes closed, every step putting more distance between me and everything that threatens, my heart is deeply settled.
