Why Kalamazoo is one of Michigan's coolest cities..

I've been spending a lot more time downtown lately because of rehearsals and visiting my stepmom(she was in Bronson for surgery for a few days, and is now home recovering well)..
The more I explore Kazoo, the more I love it. I think every great city has a personality of it's own - I'm enjoying uncovering the many facets of interest here.

I miss the lakeshore and relationships of Muskegon; the sense of roots and familiarity I feel when I drive back up 31 past Holland, International Aid, the approaching Apple Avenue exit..
I dearly miss the friendships I had/have there, and the closeness of family..

But when I think back to what I miss about Michigan, and the cities there, Kalamazoo's downtown will be the one I pine for.
Why is it so much cooler than Muskegon? I think because it's artsier.
Because just this week, I've walked past the Epic and the State Theater, rehearsed in the Civic, eaten at Burdick's, written at Zazio's, sipped the world's best anise tea at Waterstreet..lingered in Terrapin, pondered at Food Dance, lay in the grass by the fountains at Bronson Park, and absorbed the beauty of the galleries at Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts.
I plan to take a dance class at Wellspring, spend a Friday night at the Art Hop, and attend a show at the intimate New Vic theater..
Because if you live in Kalamazoo, there is no excuse for saying "there's nothing to do tonight"..
Maybe I'm crazy - maybe Muskegon has as much uniqueness to offer and I just never took the time to look for it.
Some of you who read this blog live in Muskegon(you know I love you and my hometown)..what do you think? What unique/enriching things are there to do that I may be missing?
