Tonight we spent two hours choreographing a fight scene, which I was dreading. I've never done any kind of stage combat at all , and was so afraid of 1)not being able to convey convincing enough rage against another person, and 2)accidentally hurting someone or getting hurt myself..
But, surprisingly, it was fun. And I *could* summon the appropriate appearance of rage, and I *didn't* hurt anyone(I slapped another woman at least ten times tonight, definitely a first for me), but I did get a bit hurt myself. Nothing serious, just swollen wrists and bruised knees, which I think is faring pretty well considering the intensity of the combat scene, and the fact that the person I'm fighting is a man who far exceeds me in size and strength!
The best part about tonight was that the cast finally seemed to relax and loosen up with each other (nothing like rolling on the floor clawing at each others faces to break the ice!)
;-)
Also, Mary's home safe from Turkey - we haven't talked yet, but I'm sure her blog will have a good summary of her time there soon...

Sorry for the silence..
I haven't been sleeping very well lately - my internal clock is confused, and almost every night I find myself wide awake into the wee hours. One of the effects I've noticed at times like this is that when I'm having difficulty sleeping at night, all the days seem to bleed together into one long succession of time.. it feels as if they lose their separateness and, in the context of that sensation, it becomes harder to view each day as a fresh/clean start.
As a result this blurring of the borders of my days, I tend to let longer pauses elapse before returning phone calls, doing the bills, blogging..because it doesn't seem like that long since the last time.
I know the sleeping difficulty is, with me, linked to stress, so it lets me know when I need to pay attention to how I'm handling things. There are several issues happening in our immediate corner of the world, and the sooner they get resolved, the sooner I'll be sleeping again!
The good news is, things seem to be coming to a head on several fronts and we should have solutions soon! I apologize that I can't give details at this point, but once I'm free to do so I will explain further.
Despite the intense circumstances, I have to say that I'm enjoying life very much lately!
Playing hide & seek with Justin & the girls
Washing permanent marker off my 2 year old's face and stomach after a little 'tribal body marking' adventure
Realizing too late that 1 small teaspoon of brown sugar sirred into a bowl of oatmeal, when multiplied by three helpings, still equals one very revved up wild/fast/leaping 2 year old(which, by the way, resulted in the above marker situation..)
Driving through a blizzard under a large expanse of bright blue sky streaming intense golden light through the vineyards onto the road..

transcendant connections
I'm here, mostly - but part of me is in Turkey today...
It's an odd feeling to be going about my daily routines(brush teeth, wash face, prepare lunch, light candles, clean small faces, answer phone)
and suddenly
I'm transported in my mind, intensly aware of where my little sister is(getting on the plane, switching flights, meeting strangers, sleeping at their home, and waking up to an early morning road trip..starting to absorb the sights, smells, sounds, feel of the capital Ankara)
Right now it's late at night and I should be sleeping, but I'm too excited.
Across the world, it's 8 am, and she's greeting the first Turkish morning she's ever known, and her day is filled with untold possibilities.
I think how I'm feeling is part of the essence of sharing 'life to the full' - I believe that scriptures like-"rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn"- are painting a picture of a transcendant connection..that when we *really* love each other well, we begin to experience life *with* each other..
That we can get to a point in human relationships where we can almost *feel* the pain of others ------- *feel* the thrill of joy at their victories, and even
almost
smell the morning air of Ankara.
~~~~~
I think these textured relationships are a big part of the 'abundant life ' Jesus Christ spoke about during his time on earth.
I *feel* more with people as I share life with them and grow in love for them...
I think one of the reasons I choose to trust Christ even when life is very difficult is that I know he *feels* with me...that his depth of love for me allows him to feel my tears and laughter in a way that is human, while divinely molding me *through* those painful and joyous experiences into someone whose heart looks gradually more like his, full of sincere Empathy.
~~~~~
Until the day Mar gets home safely, my heart will turn often to prayer and thoughts of her immediate experience...
~~~~~
I also have a sister who is currently in England visiting a friend. She began travelling when we were younger, and has now seen so much more of the world than many of us ever will. And, though she is often far away and out of contact during travel, I always feel that we are somehow linked.
Neither of my sisters are related to me biologically, yet we have these deep connections. and if your could put us next to each other & view our likes, wants, values, and personalities, you'd probably wonder how we ended up together at all...
But love grows deep and strong in an atmoshpere of unconditional acceptance
and
empathy.
What is anger?
To listen in on a thought-provoking perspective on anger - (where it comes from, what motivates it, what it causes..), follow these steps:
1)click on the title of this post
2)click on the portion of the bar that says "Online Media"
3) click "Listen Now"
4) Select the conversation about anger management from Feb 27.
The steps leading up to your listening experience may take about 30 sec total..
You must have the capability to play Mp3 files on your computer.
After you listen, I invite you to share your thoughts - I have altered the blog to allow anyone to post comments, whereas in the past only other bloggers have been able to do this. Just click on "comments" under each post if you want to give me any feedback.
When I grow up: a conversation between Willow and Katie
W: When I'm a big grownup i'll kind of go to Florida.
K: What will you do in Florida?
W: I would SLEEP there.
K:Oh.
W: when I grow up, I want to be a Mommy.
K: You do? Does it look like a fun job?
W: Yeah.
K: It is! First you'll get to grow up and be a wife.
W: NO, I'm gonna get married when I'm a TEENAGER.
K:(feigning calm) No, sweetie. You just want to have fun when you're a teenager. Then when you grow up you can decide to get married if you want.
K: You know, being a mom is a fun job, but you can also be other things, too!
W: Like a Mommy AND a bus driver?
K: Right! Or a mommy and a doctor, or a mommy and a singer, or a mommy and the President of the whole world!
W: I have to go to the bathroom.
See How They Run!
Irony.
I found a tiny ad in the local paper about auditions for the neighboring town's community theater, and went last sunday to check it out, although I knew nothing about the play at all..
Three hours later, I headed for home, laughing to myself as I remembered the description of the character I had read for..
Penelope Toop is a has-been actress now married to the vicar of a very traditional church. They have been at this place for about a year. She has ruffled the feathers of a powerfully influential woman in the church who feels that she doesn't behave properly for a vicar's wife. Much of the comedy of the play involves exchanges between the two women..
Penelope departs from the expectations of the congregation by being too outgoing, wearing trousers in public, and making occasional errors in judgement...in other words, she's human.
So, today I found out I got cast for this role, and I'm looking forward to drawing from personal experience to help this character come to life!
For those of you in the readership who don't see the irony yet, here it is:
I'm a wannabe actress married to the pastor of a small, 140 yr old church.
I don't play the organ, run committees, teach Sunday school, or plan baby showers.
I have a tiny bit of experience going toe to toe with women who feel my husband & I should look and act differently.
I'm so outgoing that it sometimes gets me in trouble, and anyone who knows me will tell you that I do, in fact, have occasional lapses in judgement.
So, I think Penelope & I should get along just fine.
The play will be showing locally in April(14,15,16 ?), and if anyone wants tickets just call me and we'll work out the details - thanks for those of you who were praying for me Sunday!
I hope your day, from start to finish, is full of
beauty.
